Here I will explain in depth how web sites can afford to give you free gear.

The web sites offering these gifts earn a revenue from their advertisers every time a user on their web site clicks on an advert and completes the necessary requirements. These requirements range from taking out car insurance, to signing up for a free trial for a DVD Rental service. For each user that completes these requirements, the web site will receive a fee from the advertiser, this fee can range from £20 to £50 and in some cases even more.

If we take a conservative estimate and say that they average £30 per user, that means you have earned them £30. However the gifts they offer are worth a lot more than £30, so they ask you to refer people to them. For every person that you refer that completes an offer you are earning them £30. Now it's easy to see how the maths stack up, 10 x £30 = £300 so you can see how they can afford to send you an Xbox 360 for referring 10 people.

So how do the advertisers make money out this? Well some do directly as an offer like buying car insurance puts your money straight into the advertisers bank account. The free trial offers however, unless you go past the trial period, then the advertiser will not make money from you. To the advertiser though this doesn't matter, advertisers have a budget for advertising. If you think about an advert in a magazine, that will have cost the advertiser thousands of pounds, but there's no direct link for them to make money from that, they're relying on the consumer remembering the brand and buying a product at a later date. This is just a new way of getting users trying advertised products, with no obligation. They hope that you'll remember the brand and come back and spend money with them in the future, but you are not obliged to do so if you don't want to.
